- Kristen Pfaff of Hole died of a heroin overdose in her bathtub on June 16, 1994.
- Kurt Cobain of Nirvana died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the face on April 8, 1994.
- Blind Melon frontman Shannon Hoon died on October 21, 1995 of an "intense accidental cocaine overdose".
- Jeff Buckley drowned in the Wolf River on May 29, 1997. He was wearing heavy boots at the time.
- Elliott Smith stabbed himself in the heart with a kitchen knife and died on October 21, 2003.
- John Lennon of the Beatles was murdered on December 8, 1980. He would have been 55 when "Free as a Bird" was released in 1995.
- Aaliyah was killed in a plane crash on August 25, 2001. The pilot, high on cocaine and alcohol, and had also falsely obtained his pilot's license.
- Notorious B.I.G. was shot four times in the chest just 50 yards from the Soul Train Music Awards on March 9, 1997.
- Tupac Shakur was shot four times in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas. He died 6 days later of respiratory failure. Most of his ashes were scattered, but some were mixed with marijuana and smoked by The Outlawz.
- Brad Nowell, lead singer and guitarist of Sublime, died of a heroin overdose on May 25, 1996 - just 2 months before the release of Sublime's major label debut.
- Selena was shot and killed by the president of her fanclub on March 31, 1995. She survived long enough to name her assailant.
- Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes died in a car accident in Honduras on April 25, 2002.
